Lifestyle - Bladder problems

Tip Print Share
For some people, making a few simple lifestyle changes can reduce the symptoms of bladder problems

Diet
Certain foods and drinks can worsen symptoms of urinary frequency and urge incontinence – and by eliminating or minimising these substances from your diet, you can improve, and sometimes even cure, symptoms. Foods that may contribute to bladder problems include hot spices, citrus fruits and chocolate (because of its caffeine content).

Drinks containing caffeine, such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate and fizzy drinks, cause excessive urine production and can enhance symptoms of frequency and urgency. Carbonated drinks, citrus fruit drinks, acidic juices and alcohol may also worsen symptoms.

If you have to visit the bathroom several times a night or wet the bed, you may benefit from limiting your fluid intake in the evening. But bear in mind that restricting fluids too much can actually irritate the bladder and worsen incontinence.

If you are overweight reducing your weight to a healthy level should reduce the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence – and so a healthy diet and regular exercise is recommended.

Exercise
Pelvic floor exercises (also known as Kegel exercises) can help to tighten and tone the pelvic floor muscles and reduce the symptoms of some types of incontinence.
